How New Football Formats Reshaped Betting Demand in Sportsbooks

Key Takeaways

  • Three football format expansions landed inside 24 months: UEFA’s league phase, the 32-team Club World Cup, and the 48-team World Cup. Together they added hundreds of fixtures to the global calendar.
  • UEFA’s switch from eight groups of four to a single 36-team league phase raised Champions League opening-stage fixtures from 96 to 144, a 50% increase before the knockouts begin.
  • Across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, LSports recorded close to 400 average orders per fixture and a 155% year-over-year rise in raw consumption in Q2 2025.
  • Format expansion does not only grow football demand, it reshapes the whole book. In Q2 2025 basketball overtook football as the second-fastest-growing sport by growth rate, and esports and table tennis combined for close to 10 million consumed fixtures in three months.
  • Operators treating expanded formats as a coverage problem rather than a scheduling problem are the ones converting extra fixtures into margin.

Football added more matches in two years than in the previous two decades. For sportsbooks that is not a calendar story. It is a data story, and it has already changed what demand looks like across the book.

LSports benchmarks consumption across 450+ global sportsbooks. What follows is what those books actually pulled, set against the format changes that caused it.

What actually changed, three expansions in 24 months

The word “format” does a lot of work in industry commentary, so here are the specific mechanics.

League phase. UEFA’s replacement for the group stage. All 36 clubs are ranked in a single table and each team plays eight different opponents, half at home and half away, instead of facing three opponents twice. The Europa League adopted the same eight-match league phase and the Conference League a six-match version, both from 2024/25.

Competition Previous format Current format Opening-stage fixtures
Competition Previous format Current format Opening-stage fixtures
UEFA Champions League 32 teams, 8 groups of 4, 6 matches each 36 teams, single league phase, 8 matches each 96 to 144
UEFA Europa League 32 teams, group stage 36 teams, league phase, 8 matches each Expanded
UEFA Conference League Group stage League phase, 6 matches each Expanded
FIFA Club World Cup 7 teams, annual 32 teams, quadrennial 63 matches over 29 days
FIFA World Cup 32 teams, 64 matches 48 teams, 12 groups of 4 64 to 104 matches

The 2025 Club World Cup was the first edition under the expanded format, held in the United States from 14 June to 13 July 2025 with 32 teams and 63 matches. The 2026 World Cup ran 11 June to 19 July 2026 across 16 cities, with 104 matches split 72 group stage and 32 knockout.

Why more fixtures is not the same as more betting demand

Extra matches do not translate into demand at a fixed rate. Three things change at once, and only one of them is volume.

  • Competitive spread widens. A single 36-team table means more fixtures between clubs of comparable strength, which correlates with deeper in-play markets rather than early-settled ones.
  • Concurrency rises. The league phase runs September to January, crossing domestic fixtures, cup matches and international breaks. More simultaneous events means more parallel trading load, not just more events.
  • The tail gets fatter. Expansion pulls in clubs that previously never appeared in a tier-one European competition, and those fixtures require scouting coverage that does not already exist.

The third point is where most operators lose ground. A format change adds fixtures your feed may not already cover.

What the demand data showed, UEFA’s league phase

Across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League in Q2 2025, LSports recorded close to 400 average orders per fixture and a 155% year-over-year increase in raw consumption.

Two LSports measurement units, defined:

  • Orders per fixture. The average number of discrete data requests sportsbooks place against a single fixture. It measures depth of interest, not headcount.
  • Raw consumption. Total volume of data pulled across a period, before normalizing for fixture count. Year-over-year movement captures format expansion and appetite growth together.

The 2026 World Cup, the largest format test yet

The 2026 tournament featured 48 teams, 104 matches, an additional knockout round, and required more wins to lift the trophy than any previous edition. Thirty-two of the 48 teams progressed past the group stage through a new Round of 32.

For sportsbooks this was the first live test of whether demand scales with a 63% increase in match count, or flattens as attention spreads across more fixtures.

Where the overflow landed, demand beyond football

Format expansion reshapes the entire book, not only the football section. In Q2 2025:

  • Basketball overtook football as the second-fastest-growing sport by growth rate.
  • Esports and table tennis combined for close to 10 million consumed fixtures in three months, the clearest available evidence that “niche” is a programming label, not a volume one.
  • Select WTA events outpaced ATP in betting demand for the first time on record, with niche tennis competitions posting triple-digit year-over-year growth.

The pattern holds across quarters. When the marquee calendar gets denser, the books that grow fastest are the ones already carrying depth outside it.

What sportsbooks should do about it

A checklist for trading and ops teams heading into an expanded calendar.

  1. Audit coverage against the new fixture list before the draw, not after. Expanded formats admit clubs your feed may never have carried.
  2. Model concurrency, not just volume. Peak simultaneous fixtures is the number that breaks trading desks, and it moves differently from total match count.
  3. Check scouting depth on the long tail. A league-phase fixture between two unfamiliar clubs needs the same market depth as a marquee tie, or the handle goes to a book that has it.
  4. Treat non-football verticals as capacity, not filler. The Q2 2025 esports and table tennis figures are not an anomaly.
  5. Benchmark against the market, not against last season. Year-over-year comparisons across a format change compare two different products.

LSports supports each of these through Scouts Feed for coverage depth, Hyper Feed for low-latency in-play data, and Trade for risk management across concurrent events.

Q&A

What is the UEFA league phase?

It replaced the Champions League group stage in 2024/25. All 36 clubs sit in one combined table and each plays eight different opponents, four home and four away, rather than facing three opponents twice. The Europa League uses the same eight-match structure and the Conference League a six-match version.

The Champions League opening stage rose from 96 matches to 144. The World Cup rose from 64 to 104. The Club World Cup went from an annual seven-team event to a 32-team tournament of 63 matches.

In LSports' Q2 2025 data the three UEFA competitions together showed a 155% year-over-year increase in raw consumption and close to 400 average orders per fixture.

Basketball ranked second-fastest-growing by growth rate in Q2 2025, ahead of football. Esports and table tennis together accounted for close to 10 million consumed fixtures in the same three months.

Concurrency. Expanded formats compress more simultaneous fixtures into the same windows, which stresses trading capacity and latency before it stresses market count.

Audit feed coverage against the confirmed fixture list ahead of the draw, model peak concurrency separately from total volume, and verify scouting depth on newly admitted clubs and competitions.
